Could Your Young Child Benefit From Orthodontic Treatment?
Have we recommended that your child receive orthodontic treatment, and you are concerned they are too young? Over the years, we have learned that early orthodontic treatment provides many benefits. We have realized that children benefit from a two-phase orthodontic treatment, with the first phase occurring around age seven. Depending on the results, your child may not even need the second phase of treatment. Read on to learn more about the benefits of early orthodontic treatment.
Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment
Long gone are the days when orthodontic treatment was only for teenagers. Over the years, we have found that early orthodontic treatment is beneficial for many young children. Orthodontic treatment can also be helpful for adult patients. When a child is younger, we are more concerned about the shape and size of their jaw and the arch of their teeth. Using X-rays, models of the teeth, and photographs, we are able to determine if the jaw is too wide or narrow, or if the child is experiencing breathing or bite issues. Fixing issues with the jaw early can:
- Create space to give the permanent teeth room to grow in properly
- Avoid having to remove permanent teeth at a later age
- Improve minor speech problems
- Help to prevent impacted teeth
- Coordinate the width between the upper and lower arches
- Improve the airway to prevent breathing issues
We Treat Children
We are able to treat children for orthodontic treatment in our office. This is beneficial to families because we can easily monitor the need for both phases during regular oral hygiene examinations and cleanings. This is one of the reasons that regular dental care is important. Children should be visiting our office every six months for their regular exams.
