Cancer is the general term for any disease characterized by the rapid proliferation of abnormal, malignant cells in the body. Oral cancer, therefore, involves malignant cells anywhere inside the mouth, including the gums, cheeks, tongue, lips, and upper part of the throat. It is a dangerous, potentially life-threatening disease that affects more than 3 million people every year.
How can you limit your risk of Oral Cancer?
The main risk factor for oral cancer is tobacco use. Heavy alcohol use increases a person’s risk considerably. A family history or cancer as well as excessive sun exposure are also contributing factors.
The most important thing you can do to lower your risk of oral cancer is to stop using tobacco — or just never start. Limiting alcohol consumption and sun exposure is also extremely important. Remember to use sunscreen on your lips when you know you’ll be in the sun. Another important way to limit your risk of oral cancer is to visit Dr. Ian Gray twice a year for an oral cancer screening.
How do I know if I have Oral Cancer?
Regular oral cancer screenings are instrumental in detecting the disease early, while treatment has the best chance of success. Oral cancer screenings are especially important if you do any of the things that put you at higher risk or if you have a family history of cancer.
Some of the warning signs of oral cancer are:
- A lump or a bump that appears anywhere inside your mouth or on your lips
- Swelling or thickening of the tissues in or around your mouth
- Rough spots inside your mouth or on your lips
- Fuzzy, white or reddish spots anywhere in your mouth or on your lips that do not go away
- Sores on your mouth, face or throat that do not heal in a reasonable amount of time
- Chronic hoarseness and/or sore throat
- Noticeable changes in your teeth
- Persistent difficulties swallowing
If you notice any of the symptoms listed above, see your doctor right away for specialized diagnostic tests.
